Edit: 24/10/08 - Eye shadows and highlights

I think she's day dreaming! :aww:

I just wanted to do a portrait and plus, I need the practice. No refs except for briefly looking at my own neck for the shadows. I hope to do some more portraits in the future too. I find them quite fun.

I feel like it has a summery to autumnal feel about it. :)

It will come in time. Keep at it and you'll be rolling freely soon.

If I remember right it was Corel Painter 8. I've also used Corel Painter 9.5 but stopped updating after that because, well, it's unnecessary. Unless of course there is a huge jump in the ability of the software.

I now use Photoshop CS5 almost exclusively, as Corel Painter did not seem to appreciate my new keyboard and has crashed ever since. I hold out the hope that I can one day regain the patience to figure the issue out. Anyway, I know you will enjoy the way it creates natural strokes for certain. I always loved the oils and mixer brushes myself. My tip is always play around with the brush settings at first to get them to work with your style.

Take a look at Photoshop too, it's a good all rounder. What software are you practising with right now?

I'm currently using GIMP, because I keep getting mixed reviews on everyone that uses Corel and Photoshop. That and it's free. I have Corel Painter 4 (came free with the tablet), but found it difficult to use as it didn't like to recognise my tablet for some reason.
I like gimp, because it recognises the changes in what I'm using. So if I use my pen for a brush then swap to my mouse and use an eraser, when I swap back to my pen it automatically goes back to what I was last using on it which I love.
If you say Corel 9.5 is fine I might see if it's on eBay and hit that up!.

I've looked into CS5 but I thought that was mostly for photo manipulations, but I could be wrong.
I'm slowly getting the hang of downloading some different brush styles because you only get the basics with Gimp.
Are there any you'd recommend?

There are some good free programs out there to begin with, for sure. I thought that Photoshop was more for photos and manipulations too. However, I used Photoshop Elements for quite a while before I got the full program and found out how good it was for artwork. I customised the brushes and used it in the same way I did my traditional work (sketches and then painting the canvas). It's more work than people realise. I would suggest that you try it out through Photoshop Elements (if you're unsure) and most times you can get it with another purchase like a scanner or something. It's also relatively cheap on it's own.

If you are happy with a program and feel like you can grow with it, then you can afford to wait to buy one of the big programs.

You know, dA is a great way to start experimenting with brushes, as there are people who have made them specifically to share. [link] by Adonihs or there's [link] as a start and with Corel Painter, for me, it's mainly been from ones supplied with digital arts magazines on their CDs. I would highly suggest seeking them out personally to find ones that suit your needs. With Photoshop you can also create your own (which is incredibly good). After a while, you'll be creating your own.

When it all comes down to it you only need a few in your everyday working set. You adjust them as you need and you're good to go. It doesn't have to be complicated. A couple of hard round, soft round and 1 or 2 effects brushes can create some fantastic art.

I know you probably don't remember me. I discovered Corel Painter on the uni computers and had a play. Got home to draw with my free GIMP download and realised GIMP is pretty much just an improved version of paint and that you're mostly drawing Freehand!.

I am thinking I need to buy COREL argghhh but thanks for your help

I certainly do remember you! :XD: Apologies for the late reply. It's really good to get your hands on the programs before you have to fork out the cash. At the very least, you can be certain that you are making the right choice for yourself because you have gathered all the information at the beginning.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed with Corel. Let me know how you get on (if you remember this ;) by the time you get it of course.
