The Mermaid's Stare by lunarsparks The Mermaid's Stare by lunarsparks
I wanted to create a painting of a mermaid, which I was always fascinated by the idea of when I was little (them and vampires:evileyes:).

I kept the base very loose and tried not to overwork it, allowing the mermaid to stand out, whilst still implying an ethereal magic to her in the surrounding waters.

Let me know what you think.

Painter and tablet.

G’Day Leigh,

Maybe the mermaid stares at people in such a way as to frighten them off and to leave her alone. As she knows that they will more than likely try to kill her for a fishing trophy or to capture her and place her in an aquarium for others to be amused by her loss of liberty.

BTW more excellent work on your part. :painter:

Regards, :bye:

You've blended together the light and dark concepts into this piece very capably. The first impression of mermaid is good, then the torso seems a little 'bad' girl leaning in how she expresses herself, but the tail is still bright and immutable. I suppose you can't exactly judge a book by it's cover.

The mermaid looks alive (and/or undead :) ), with her facial expression and eyes very well framed with the hair. Interesting tattoo she's sporting, and I appreciate the way that curves are the prominent feature everywhere on her form, hair, lips, face, eyes, bust, and tail.

Thank you for all of your comments. You are really wonderful in looking at the detail. You've nailed the way I wanted this to appear on the head with the "can't judge a book by it's cover" comment. I didn't want it to be typical of a mermaid at all. Thanks again. :D

Well, I've had mixed reviews on the design of it ... my intention was to give it a more striking appearance so it fitted nicely with the mermaid's whole image. It was never going to be a romantic vision of a mermaid so I based it on a tropical fish's tail to get those stronger colours.

hmm. ill admit that it stands out a lot, and ushally, that looks bad but i think your tail....welll your mermaids tail....looks awesome! mmhm. not romantic, but i love how you can make your characters look mysterious in all.

Oh, it's really good to know that. I understand what you mean about something standing out and I'm relieved to know that it's not a bad thing here. Thank you very much, your comment helps me a lot.

The look in her eyes is very Kali-ish and is very Dark Motherish, yet somehow retains some innocence. My favorite aspect of this piece is her hands and their position. Very spiritual. I like it alot!~

Wow thank you for really looking at my picture. I like having that kind of aspect in the picture where it is uncertain whether she is innocent or has another intent. It's nice to know your thoughts on it.

lovely camera angle and the use of colours. i love the way the water circles around her. the tail looks lovely only that i don't really like the design of the fin. i think this is one of the loveliest magical work on mermaid i seen so far. overall great job :)

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. With the fin, I went by the way it joined to the body on a tropical fish, so I could get the attachment right. It's funny because that's the only part I used a reference for. I really appreciate your thoughts, it's so amazing that you think that way about my work. :thanks:

I think that she could be either bad or good. I have my own thoughts on it but I like to let people figure it out. :D

Disney ... Yeah and even they turned the original sad ending of the book into a happy one. There was 'Splash' as well. I loved that film.
